Projectors and Film
Video and sound installation that explores what a house experiences on the outside. What a home can feel, and make you feel.
Artist Statement:
08638 is an installation work that uses 4 projected video clips, each 58 seconds long. The clips play on repeat, with raw audio of the original landscape. Each projection frames a house looking into my bedroom, and captures a different time of day and weather. Starting on the left, the clip depicts the morning, moving to early afternoon, to a rainy evening and finally nightfall. The projections span the width of three walls and viewers are encouraged to walk up and through each of the projections to become fully immersed in each environment. My intention with this piece was ultimately to pay homage to my home in 08638, as it is my first home away from home. From the day I moved in, the house has existed as a safe haven and truly provided me with a year of memories that have shaped, stretched and strengthened me. As I have experienced so much within that home, this work exists in turn as a way to study and examine the things my home experiences as well. As the days pass, whether rain, sunshine, cold or warm, my home has stood firm cradling me inside. Thus I wanted to reflect on the things my home has felt, on the outside. This work was overall very well received and understood the way I had intended by my peers. The feeling of safety, sacredness and belonging was translated through the ambience of sound and stillness.
Plans for Installation:
This work would be installed much the same way as this first installation. Depending on the gallery space itself, each projection could have a separate wall, or be arranged in any sequence that best suites the space. Each projection would be the same size. I would play with the corners of the walls and how the play off of the corners on the houses. The room would be dark, as to put emphasis on the color and varying brightness of each projection. Additionally, the sound system would amplify the ambient sounds of each video as they play on a loop. All videos will continually run, simultaneously for viewers to enjoy at their own pace, and leave when they are finished.
