Scanned and Photocopied Objects, Paper Weaving
Untitled, 2021, is a woven paper textile composed of an assemblage of various scanned and photocopied objects. From my own memory box, I chose out particular pieces that were then scanned and printed out. The objects themselves range from 2010 through present day, and are particular to various people and places. Once converted to photographs I deconstructed, manipulated and sorted each strip of paper as I worked to reconstruct them into one complete piece. The work is a stand in for the particular memories of my own life that have greatly impacted me. Transforming 3-dimensional objects into their 2-dimensional form allowed me to compile them together as one whole. What’s more, the slow and reflective process of weaving together the work allows for me to meditate on how each memory relates to one another. As each strip of paper overlaps, particular relationships are created between text, image and color. I allowed certain parts of the text to reveal intimate moments in time. The flexibility of the paper speaks to the tangibility of sculpture; its object-ness creates a tangibility of memory, time and collection.
This work is a starting point for what hopefully will bloom into a much larger work, one that is woven over time and continuously added to throughout the years.
