Home Sweet Home, 2021

Artist Statement:

Home Sweet Home is a 1 minute, 13 second video piece in which the outside of my home is recorded during afternoon light. As members move in and out of the house, a small snippet of their lives are recorded in the midst of daily routine. At the end of the video, the frame zooms out to reveal that the home lives inside of a black picture frame, hanging on the wall. This piece includes raw audio, as well as added piano music of my dear friend and musician Alexa Aquino. The music, a suspenseful build up of chords, serves as a way to queue the viewer in on the idea that from the very beginning of the video, something is not quite as it seems. This video exists to examine reality and question what goes on behind closed doors. Are happy homes really that happy? Can the phrase “picture perfect” be used in irony as a way to explore these questions?
