We are the same, We are not, 2021

Alginate, Plaster, Ink

This project stems off of one main idea: as humans we are all so uniquely different, yet the same.

Using alginate, I casted three different hands to make molds. These included my own hand and two other artists. I purposely used a bent hand shape in order to emphasize the creases and texture of the palm for the final plaster cast. After pouring and setting the molds in plaster, I painted over the palms using ink, highlighting the "fingerprint" of each hand. Using ink was a particular choice as it is representative of the ink pads used to produce official, identifiable fingerprints. The stable hand shape of each hands produces a familiarity and a relationship between the anatomy of the hand that we all collectively have. As I invite viewers to investigate the subtleties of each hand print, one begins to notice that each hand is so delicately constructed and distinctive from one another.
