Mapping Movement, 2021
Twine, Command Hooks
An installation that gives form to my movement, by tracking how I moved through the space of my home during a twelve hour period.
Artist Statement:
Mapping Movement is an installation piece that exists entirely out of twine. Installed on the floor of the installation room, the twine was connected to command hooks placed along the bottom border of the walls. From one command hook to another the twine was tied off and laid on the ground. A total of a little over 600 feet of twine was used in this process. As a 3D visual map, the mapping pattern was directly translated from my journal recordings. During a 12 hour period I recorded my movement between the spaces in my home. Everywhere I went, I figuratively created lines. These lines were then literally translated to this map and exist now as a drawing on the floor. By building form out of something that does not ordinarily have form, I am able to explore endless conceptual possibilities. In person, viewers would be invited to explore the space by walking through my map, and would also have the opportunity to track their own movement while they navigate through mine by dragging twine where they walk. Really, this piece exists as a way to call attention to the way we move, the way we interact with our environment. While this is not something we ordinarily think about, it is something that nevertheless exists.
Plans for Installation:
This work would be installed in a gallery the same way I installed it in the TCNJ installation room. Using the floor as my canvas, I use the space to translate my movement into lines on the floor. The room would be dimly lit, with brighter ceiling lights casting on specific parts of the map.
I'd want my viewers to navigate the map by walking through it themselves. They would also track their movement as they explore mine. They could do this by possibly using their own string as attached to the wall for them to pull and let fall as a way to mark their tracks. Viewers would be able to navigate the twine for as little or as long as they please.
