Artist Statement:

Ebb, flow functions as an installation that has one simple aim: to parallel the cycle of life in nature with the cycle of our own lives. This installation projects a 6 minute, 1 second video onto the back wall while netting fabric droops directly in front of it. The projection slightly wraps around to the adjacent side walls, creating an environment for the fabric to live in. The video repeats in cycles of 30 seconds, in which water flows towards the viewer for 30 seconds before changing direction to flow away from the viewer. Referencing the pull of the tide, the subtle and hypnotic undulation of the water repeats endlessly as it is accompanied by the sound of flowing water. The video is referential to the natural world, yet allows for the absence of setting to take an emphasis off of any specific time or place. The piece uses colors that create a dream-like space for our imagination while also tugging at something familiar. The transparency of the fabric allows the waves to reflect and roll right through the netting. Ebb, flow is both ethereal and grounded in mother nature. It aches for our attention, without demanding it at all.
