Chair, 2021

Cotton clothes, Glue

My interest in the relationship between the human body and the body of a chair is what fueled the creation of this sculpture. Why is it that parts of an inanimate object are referred to as the same parts of the human body? In exploring this, I used clothes to create a chair in which the form of an individual sitting became the chair itself- simultaneously referencing each part of the chair and the body. This piece is playful, as it explores form, space, and the uncanny. By soaking the clothes in a glue and water mixture, I was able to create an empty vessel in which the clothes hold the absence of a person- becoming an object itself. Furthermore, as a continuation to my larger body of work, this work explores providing form for what ordinarily does not have form, such as the space an individual takes up while they sit.
